"Relational
and beyond:
Applications of object-relational database technology in the Oracle
RDBMS"
The appearance of
object-oriented
databases in the late 1990's led major database vendors like Oracle to
also implement object-relational features into the RDBMS. This
technology consists basically in the ability to create own data types
with support for methods and inheritance. Those data types can then be
used for tables and stored procedures.
Today, many features of the Oracle RDBMS have their foundation in this
object relational technology. The presentation shows, how
object-oriented technology is utilized within the Oracle Database to
provide support for non-relational data like spatial, XML or multimedia
information and beyond that how this data is integrated seamlessly with
relational tables.
